GGML participates in Covid-19 special awareness training program for Geita journalists

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, journalists have the difficult task of gathering and disseminating accurate information. To this end, the Geita Regional Commissioner’s Office invited around 60 journalists and media professionals to a COVID-19 awareness-raising workshop. The introduction of this special Covid-19 special awareness training programme aims to put a stop to misinformation about the alleged dangers of vaccination.

GGML Senior Staff receive COVID-19 vaccines at GEDECO Hall in Geita Town Council

On the 4th of August 2021, some of the GGML Senior staff gathered at the GEDECO hall in Geita Town, to receive the Johnson & Johnson vaccine donated to Tanzania by the US government.
Speaking on behalf of the GGML Senior Staff, the Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Aallen Mtemi, said that the vaccine had arrived in Geita town at the right
time as many families in Geita were affected by the pandemic and most people had been waiting for the vaccine for a long time.

A short drive north of Geita takes you into Kasota ward and there lays the rural village of Bugurura, where for many years the majority of its residents have depended solely on income generated from agriculture. Historically, gender imbalance has adversely affected the labor market. Women were not considered for some positions and largely stereotyped as incapable of performing some roles. Mining in particular for decades has been a male dominated industry. However, a shift is in place. Due to global advocacy movements, gender parity and women empowerment is now firmly a strategic agenda item for businesses, government, community organizations and multilateral institutions.

“Nyamulilima open pit project allows me to continue providing for my family” – Lucas Edward.

Nyamulilima open pit mining was inaugurated on 17th April 2021 with expectations to produce up to one million ounces of gold in the next six (6) years. This project comprises of Ridge 8, Star and Comet, Xanadu, Selous, Mabe and Roberts cuts. The project is a significant one for Geita Gold Mining Limited, as it will provide job opportunities, social services and facilities, benefiting AngloGold Ashanti as an investor, the Government and the communities. It will not only add to GGM’s life of mine but significantly compliment the underground projects of Star & Comet, Nyankanga and Geita hill.

Petro Alphone Recollects the Commissioning of Nyamulilima – Behind the Wheel of a Dump Truck

At precisely 13:20 on 17th April 2021, the first bucket of ore material was loaded onto dump truck 410, signaling the start of open pit operations at Nyamulilima. Behind the wheel of that truck was Petro Pius Alphonce, an experienced dump truck operator who considers himself lucky to have such memories to pass to his grandchildren.
