In Tanzania, community development is one of the material issues to which we are committed. Our support at Geita was guided by the community investment procedure.
In July 2017, the Parliament of Tanzania amended the Mining Act 2010, and introduced section 105, which describes the procedure for mineral right holders to prepare and execute their corporate social responsibility (CSR) plans. Geita mine is the first in the country to execute its social and economic projects under the new legislation. Most of these are infrastructure projects.
Malaria remains endemic in Geita, the region ranking second in terms of disease burden in Tanzania. Tanzania is among the 10 countries in the world with the highest number of malaria cases and deaths accounting for:
- 3% of the global cases
- 13.4% of cases in east and southern Africa
- 5% of global deaths
The fight against malaria has remained a priority through advocacy, distribution of mosquito repellents, environmental vector controls and distributing mosquito treated bed nets amongst the workforce. As a result, cases of malaria declined 31.2% in 2020 compared to 2019 and the Malaria Frequency Lost Time improved by 35.7%. This is a significant improvement compared to 2018, where we recorded a decrease of malaria by 0.17% among employees and contractors affected by that time.
Under the 2019 corporate social investment plan, the mine funded the roofing of 20 dispensaries, finished construction of 12 dispensaries, and built four new dispensaries at Nyakato, Mgusu, Ibanda and Bihegule.
Investing in health infrastructure with the Geita District Council in 2019 and 2020
Working with the Geita District Council, the mine has continued its intensive focus on healthcare infrastructure. The construction of 14 outpatient department (OPD) buildings are now completed and building roofs for 17 OPDs is underway. Geita mine has also funded the construction of six staff houses and provided medical equipment to Kasota Health Centre – including an anaesthesia machine, an operating table and lamp, a monitoring machine, pulse oximeter, retinoscopy, laparotomy sets and a direct ophthalmoscope.
Ongoing support is provided to community health facilities by providing building materials like timber, reinforcement bars and cement.
Support for Geita Town Council in 2019 and 2020
Working with the Geita Town Council, the mine completed:
- the Nyakato, Mugusu Ibanda out-patient buildings
- a premature baby unit at the Geita Regional Hospital
- Five staff houses
- The prison dispensary
They also started a cleft palate surgical programme to help children in the community and provided materials for the completion of a number of health facilities.
Geita Town market frames
The company contributed approximately $600,000 towards establishment of the Geita Town market in 2018. Construction of the market frames has been completed. Positive spinoffs from the market include transportation, catering and the supply of goods and services to traders. About 5,000 employment opportunities have been created from this initiative.
Geita Town roundabout
In collaboration with the Geita Town council, the company has financed the construction of the Geita Town traffic roundabout. The facility was installed at the request of the local authorities to cordon off high-traffic areas and thus reduce road accidents.
Special Economic Zone Centre
Under the 2019 corporate social responsibility plan, the mine funded the construction of the Special Economic Zone Centre (EPZ) at the Bombambili grounds in Geita. This included:
- The Construction of the 2-kilometre-long tarmac road connecting to Mwanza main road
- Construction of Katundu Main market
- Completion of the Gold Market main frames – Phase II
- Construction of Katoro Market main frames
- Purchase of brand new generators for Main market and Rubondo Radio
- Purchasing a skip truck and modifying existing buckets that are part of waste management strategies within Geita.
Support for neighbouring districts
In consultation with the office of the Regional Commissioner, Geita extended support to other districts, in terms of providing building materials for health and education facilities. The company assisted in the construction of a modern operating theatre at the Chato District Hospital and delivered materials to three districts of Mbogwe and Bukombe.
Classrooms and school infrastructure
Education can change people’s lives and is a focus for our community investment projects. During 2018, Geita mine committed to facilitating the construction of 295 classrooms in the Geita district. Construction works are underway with 198 classrooms completed by year end. The new classrooms will help to provide a conducive learning environment for the students whose performances have been impacted by challenging learning conditions.
In 2019, the mine supported primary and secondary schools by providing infrastructure including building roofs for 123 classrooms, renovating 83 classrooms and constructing 38 school toilets. It also constructed two classrooms at Magogo Vocational Centre, five classrooms at Bombambili and completed 20 classrooms and six staff houses. The mine constructed three new dormitories at Bugando, Kamena and Bulela Secondary Schools to accommodate students. It also renovated two dormitories at Geita Secondary School, and built 20 toilets and two food courts.
- Economic development
Geita focuses on creating a sustainable and positive legacy through economic development projects. These projects aim to improve the welfare of the local farming community and to provide alternative sustainable livelihoods for host communities.
Paddy storage facility
In 2018, Geita mine constructed a paddy storage facility at Saragulwa village, to store harvested rice, which was officially handed over to the farmers’ co-operative, Nyabusakama. In 2019, the mine installed a milling machine at the facility.
Sunflower oil mill
At Kasota village, the farming co-operative also owns the sunflower oil mill being constructed and equipped by Geita mine. In 2019, the mine funded the completion of infrastructure at the factory including installing a water system, electricity upgrades and supplying machinery.
