Enabling Sustainable Livelihoods in Geita

Economic opportunity is central to long-term community resilience. At Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), our livelihoods programmes are designed to strengthen local enterprise, enhance income generation, and create shared value across our host communities. This work contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 1: No Poverty, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

Between 2018 and 2025, GGML invested over 12 billion TZS (4.56 million USD) in livelihood initiatives. These investments focus on building practical skills, strengthening local value chains, and supporting community-led enterprises that can grow sustainably over time.

Key programmes include sunflower farming, rice cultivation, and cage fishing, each designed to unlock local potential while responding to market opportunities. Through partnerships with cooperatives and community groups, GGML supports access to inputs, training, and markets, enabling participants to increase productivity and improve household incomes.

Across these initiatives, the focus remains consistent: creating opportunities that are locally rooted, economically viable, and capable of delivering long-term impact.

Supporting enterprise, strengthening incomes, and building resilient communities

For Paulo James Pwagi, a sunflower farmer and union member in Kasota, livelihoods support has translated into tangible improvements in daily life. Through GGML-supported farming initiatives, Paulo has strengthened both his productivity and income, enabling him to better provide for his family.

With access to improved farming practices and collective support through his union, sunflower farming has become a more reliable and sustainable source of income. What was once a modest activity has grown into a meaningful livelihood, supporting household stability and future planning.

For Paulo, the impact extends beyond the farm. Increased income has improved food security, supported family needs, and created a greater sense of confidence in the future. His story reflects the broader value of investing in local enterprise: when livelihoods grow, communities grow with them.

Through livelihoods, opportunities continue to expand. Explore more of our impact stories here.
