AngloGold Ashanti Welcomes 2026 with Moyo wa Huruma Orphanage in Geita

On the 9th of January 2026, the sound of a new year arriving in Geita wasn’t just fireworks or music, it was children laughing, leaders listening, and a shared promise that every child deserves a fair start.

Representing AngloGold Ashanti (Geita Gold Mine), Acting Managing Director Duan Campbell joined the Geita Regional Commissioner, Hon. Martin Shigella, the Geita Regional Medical Officer, Dr. Omari Sukari, alongside religious leaders and banking institutions, to stand with the children and the caregivers who serve them. At the heart of the gathering was one clear message: a child’s beginning should never be the limit of their future. Speaking directly to the children, Duan Campbell said, “

Moyo wa Huruma’s leadership reminded everyone that the children at the centre come from many difficult circumstances, including abandonment and health-related needs, but that this home remains a place of stability and second chances. It is also a place sustained through partnership: AngloGold Ashanti, through Geita Gold Mine, supports more than 80% of the centre’s needs, working alongside government and other partners to ensure the children are cared for and protected.

One story shared during the day landed with particular weight, the journey of Dr. George Kadondo, held up as proof that no child should be discouraged by where they started. His example was shared as a message directly to the children: their future is bright, and they have a growing circle of support from the mine, the government, and partners helping them reach it.

Hon. Martin Shigella thanked AngloGold Ashanti (Geita Gold Mine) for its continued commitment to mining that empowers individuals and advances societies, and spoke of his optimism for even greater impact ahead, especially through community investments that benefit children at Moyo wa Huruma and the wider Geita community.

The celebration also reflected the centre’s history and identity, shaped by both community care and faith leadership, where the church has long been part of the story of protecting vulnerable children. In many ways, the partnership between responsible mining and faith-based service carries a shared meaning: refining what is valuable. Just as gold is refined through a careful process, a child’s potential is revealed through consistent care, guidance, and love, turning hardship into strength.

As 2026 begins, the message from Moyo wa Huruma is simple and enduring: this is a home of hope, and hope grows when partners stay committed. AngloGold Ashanti (Geita Gold Mine) appreciates Moyo wa Huruma’s leadership and caregivers, the Government of Tanzania, faith leaders, and institutional partners for standing together for the children, so they can grow with dignity, confidence, and real opportunity.
