Climate Action Takes Centre Stage as Geita Community Marks World Environment Day 2026

Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) joined partners and communities across Geita to mark World Environment Day 2026 through a week-long programme focused on awareness, education and practical climate action.

Held under the global theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”, the commemorations brought together the Geita Municipal Council, NEMC, Tanzania Forest Services, schools, employees and local residents to promote environmental stewardship and sustainable living.

Throughout the week, GGML teams visited schools, engaged communities in Samina Village and Manga Street, and used local radio platforms to encourage everyday actions that protect the environment. Activities also included caring for previously planted trees at Geita Girls’ and Bombambili secondary schools.

The programme culminated on 5 June with a company-wide march and tree-planting ceremony led by GGML Managing Director, Ashraf Suryaningrat, alongside Directors and Heads of Departments.

A key highlight was the distribution of 240 improved cookstoves to community members. Designed to use fuel more efficiently, the stoves help reduce indoor smoke, lower household fuel consumption and ease pressure on surrounding forests. The initiative is particularly beneficial for women and girls, who often bear the responsibility of collecting firewood.

Speaking during the event, Managing Director Ashraf Suryaningrat noted that climate change is no longer a future concern but a present reality that requires practical action at every level. He reaffirmed GGML’s commitment to advancing environmental sustainability through responsible mining practices and community partnerships, emphasizing that the people of Geita remain central to the company’s sustainability journey.

GGML Environment Manager, Yusuph Mhando, said the week’s activities align closely with Tanzania’s long-term development aspirations as outlined in Dira 2050. He noted that sustainable management of natural resources and the transition towards a green economy are critical to the country’s future prosperity, adding that initiatives such as World Environment Day demonstrate the urgency and collective responsibility reflected in the theme..

For GGML, World Environment Day was more than a commemoration. It served as a reminder that meaningful climate action happens when environmental responsibility is translated into everyday practice — from institutions to households, and from awareness into lasting behavioural change.
