The same road supports mining activities, making awareness of hazardous materials an important part of community safety.
This is why GGML is taking its annual cyanide awareness campaign directly to vulnerable communities along the route, turning technical knowledge into simple, potentially lifesaving information.
Cyanide is important in gold recovery, but it requires careful management. According to the World Health Organization, exposure to hydrogen cyanide concentrations of around 300 mg/m³ can be fatal within minutes, demonstrating why prevention, awareness and professional emergency response matter.
Through practical conversations, communities are learning to keep away from suspected spills, protect children and livestock, and alert emergency responders rather than intervening themselves.
For GGML, the message travelling from Kahama to Geita is simple: when communities understand risk, knowledge becomes protection, and safety travels beyond the mine gate.
The initiative also contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, supporting efforts to protect people from the health risks associated with hazardous chemicals and create safer, more resilient communities.
