Across six schools in Geita, a quiet but powerful story has been unfolding, one of confidence, curiosity, and girls discovering that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) can be part of their future.
Through this year’s mentorship programme, led by Hadija Kisatu (pictured below, right), GGML employees returned to Nyalwanzaja, Kamena, Bugando, Kasota, Butundwe, and Bugulula Secondary Schools, building on the foundation laid in previous years. Working alongside dedicated teachers and school leaders, the mentors helped bring STEM closer to everyday learning. More
More than 1,700 students were reached, with encouraging results, including improved exam pass rates and growing interest in STEM clubs and activities. For many girls, the programme created something even more meaningful: the confidence to believe that they belong in these fields.
Employees stepped forward not only as professionals, but also as role models. Leaders such as Dorcas Mulyambate (pictured below) and Ruth Mugurusi shared their journeys, showing students that careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are possible and within reach.
The impact matters. According to the United Nations, women make up only about 35% of STEM graduates globally, highlighting the importance of encouraging girls early to explore science.
