GGML Recognised at 2026 Maji Excellence Awards for Leadership in Water Stewardship

GGML was honoured this week at the 2026 Maji Excellence Awards in Arusha, receiving formal recognition for its gold-level sponsorship in support of sustainable water stewardship and responsible resource management.

Held alongside the Water Utilities Boards of Directors Leadership Conference, the awards celebrate institutions advancing performance standards and service excellence to ensure safe, reliable, and sustainable water services for Tanzanians. During the ceremony, Hon. Jumaa Hamidu Aweso, Minister for Water, commended GGML for its sponsorship, responsible leadership and active participation in both the mining and water sectors, recognising the Company as a committed development partner.

Representing GGML were Simon Shayo, Vice President for Sustainability and Corporate Affairs, Africa, AngloGold Ashanti; Stephen Mhando, PR and Communications Manager; and Dr. Kiva Mvungi, Senior Manager, Health, Safety and Environment.

In his remarks, Shayo highlighted GGML’s long-term commitment to water stewardship, particularly in the Lake Zone and in protecting the Geita Forest Reserve. “Water stewardship is central to how we operate,” he noted, adding that as GGML recently marked 25 years of operations, the company looks ahead to “the next 25 years of responsible water use and partnership in line with the nation’s Dira 2050.”

GGML has previously invested in water-related initiatives in Geita Region, including contributions toward improving water access through the Geita Water Project, which has brought potable water to over 300,000 people in Geita and strengthened supply infrastructure, expanding service coverage for surrounding communities.

By supporting platforms that elevate performance standards and celebrate service excellence, GGML directly contributes to national efforts to ensure safe, reliable, and sustainable water services for Tanzanians.
