Mining CSR in Action: Fish Farming Builds Skills, Income and Community Resilience

On the shores of Lake Victoria, the Jiendeleze Mchangani Group’s first harvest delivered more than 4.8 tonnes of fish from a single cage. It delivered proof of what purposeful corporate social responsibility (CSR) can achieve when investment builds livelihoods, skills, and long-term ownership.

Through a TZS 251 million community investment, Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), in partnership with the Geita District Council, provided four fish cages, 120,000 fingerlings, and 36 tonnes of feed to launch a commercial cage fish farming project for 31 community members. The initiative is turning local potential into enterprise by creating employment, strengthening household income, and building practical aquaculture skills across the fisheries value chain.

Its strength lies in a revolving empowerment model. Income from each harvest will support operating costs, grow community capital, and eventually transfer ownership to the beneficiaries. The fund will then support similar groups, extending impact beyond one project and creating a pathway for wider economic participation.

Government and community leaders have commended the partnership for supporting district revenue, food security, and alternative livelihoods that help reduce illegal fishing.
