For Scholastica Kabonge, Community Policing Officer and a recent graduate of the Female Future Leadership Programme (Cohort 11) by the Association of Tanzania Employers in partnership with the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI), responsible mining means building trust through consistency, respect, and collaboration.
“Responsible mining is not a well-documented piece of paper… it is something tangible you can see, feel and measure in everyday community life,” she explains. This belief is reflected in the mine’s shift toward a partnership-based security approach grounded in human rights, supported by trained teams and modern technology.
Community policing remains central to this progress. Through initiatives aligned with Tanzania’s Ulinzi Shirikishi concept, the mine works closely with local communities, police, and stakeholders to promote safety, transparency, and shared accountability. These efforts continue to strengthen relationships while creating meaningful employment opportunities, particularly for young people.
As Scholastica notes, “Community policing… has shifted significantly, moving from reactive policing to more collaborative, technology-driven and community-friendly.”
