Strengthening the Fight Against Malaria in Geita

Malaria remains a major public health challenge in Tanzania, and Geita continues to carry a significant burden.

While the proportion of malaria tests returning positive results in Geita Municipal Council declined from 13% in 2024 to 8.8% in 2025, several wards still record much higher rates, showing why sustained action matters.

Through our partnership with Geita Municipal Council, Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) is supporting a malaria vector-control campaign combining indoor residual spraying (IRS) and biolarviciding.

The programme targets mosquito breeding sites and mosquitoes inside homes, complementing existing interventions such as insecticide-treated nets. It also strengthens community awareness and local health capacity.

For GGML, responsible mining extends beyond our operations. It means helping create healthier, more resilient communities where people can thrive. This initiative contributes directly to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, while supporting Tanzania’s ambition to eliminate malaria.

Stay tuned: In an upcoming story, our Socio-Economic Development team will take us into the communities to share the campaign’s progress, the impact being seen on the ground, and what more is needed to sustain the momentum against malaria.
