Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) participated in a computer handover ceremony at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), reinforcing its support for education, innovation, and skills development within Tanzania’s mining and geosciences sector.
The engagement brought together university leadership, faculty members from the School of Mines and Geosciences (SOMG), and representatives from GGML, underscoring the value of collaboration between industry and academia in preparing students for the future of work.
The ceremony was officiated by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam, Prof. William Anangisye. In his remarks, Prof. Anangisye noted that the computers will strengthen teaching in mining and geosciences by supporting practical, technology-enabled learning. He emphasised that access to modern digital tools plays an important role in bridging the technology gap and preparing students for careers in Tanzania’s mining sector.
University leadership also acknowledged that GGML employs graduates from UDSM and highlighted how the company’s engagement, through contributions, field attachments, and exposure to industry practice, has enriched the learning environment for both students and faculty. UDSM expressed interest in seeing this partnership continue and expand.
Speaking on behalf of AngloGold Ashanti, Simon Shayo, Vice President for Sustainability and Corporate Affairs, Africa, AngloGold Ashanti, reflected on the role UDSM has played in shaping professionals across sectors, noting that the university had also shaped his own career journey.
He highlighted the importance of technology in advancing safety, sustainability, and innovation in mining and referenced emerging initiatives within the sector, including developments related to electric vehicle production, as examples of how technology continues to transform the industry.
The engagement was a testament to the shared commitment between GGML and UDSM to support skills development, innovation, and applied learning. It also highlighted the importance of sustained partnerships in equipping students with the knowledge and tools required to contribute meaningfully to Tanzania’s development.
