Bringing dignity to students’ milestones

Ramadhan has spent the past decade teaching at Butundwe Secondary School. Originally from Morogoro, he previously taught at a private school in Kilimanjaro before moving to Katoro. He now lives in the community with his wife and their 7 year‑old son.

During his tenure, Mr. Ramadhan has watched the school transform through joint efforts by the government, the local community and GGML. “Good systems and infrastructure are essential for student success,” he says. He points to several improvements spearheaded by these partnerships: a dormitory built jointly by GGML and the Katoro community in 2022, which made A‑level boarding possible, and an ongoing renovation of the school’s biology lab.

The latest addition, a multi‑purpose dining hall, has had an even bigger impact. “Its construction means that our key events can happen with dignity,” he explains. Instead of holding exams or celebrations outdoors, the school now has a suitable indoor space. “For example, we recently conducted a Form IV exam with 170 students at once.”

He still vividly recalls the 2024 Form IV graduation ceremony. Held in the rainy (Masika) season, the celebration was interrupted by torrential rain. Students and parents huddled under trees for shelter, and the festive mood was dampened. With the new hall, Ramadhan is confident that future ceremonies will carry on undisturbed come rain or shine.
