A teacher who chose medicine to multiply impact

Originally from  Musoma, Ukerewe, where he was a teacher for 6 years, Charles came to Geita in April 2020 and has been at Nkome Health Center for 5 years. He shifted to the medical profession and pursued studies in medicine motivated by a desire to bring positive health impact to Tanzanian communities. His experience in administration and dealing with parents and young children also supports the operations at the center.

But working at Nkome has not been without challenges. With only 3 staff members, the facility struggles to meet demand, often serving nearly 200 patients per month. In the past, services were provided in cramped rooms or even under trees, exposing patients to rain and scorching sun. Medicines are sometimes in short supply, rest areas for patients are lacking, and there is no mortuary. Families often face the burden of traveling 43 km to Kahama or 52 km to Geita for referrals.

Despite these hurdles, his commitment has never wavered. He continues to advocate for improved infrastructure, more staff housing, and a stronger drug supply chain. His focus is on ensuring the health centre can fully meet the needs of the community.

One of his most memorable moments was counseling a young woman who came to the facility 7 months pregnant, asking to terminate her pregnancy. With guidance and encouragement from Charles, she decided to carry the pregnancy to term. Today, that child is alive and thriving,  a reminder to him of the life changing role health workers can play.
