From cramped rooms to dignified care: how infrastructure is reshaping Nzera

Gabriel Leonard Massawe is the health administrator at Nzera and has worked at the center since 2022. Married and a father to a three year old child, Gabriel brings administrative experience from his time working with the council before moving into the health sector.

When he first joined Nzera, there were many challenges and the facility operated under very difficult conditions. Small rooms doubled as treatment and surgery spaces, with little privacy for patients. “Anyone passing by could see whatever was going on,” he recalls, noting how uncomfortable it was both for patients and for the health workers trying to maintain dignity during treatment. With many patients and limited facilities, the staff struggled to provide adequate care.

The recent project has given Gabriel hope for the future. With expanded infrastructure, he looks forward to expanding healthcare services and greater specialization among the staff.
