Lucas is proud to be part of the Katoro community. Once a quieter area, Katoro has grown rapidly, becoming a preferred residential area for migrant miner families. The region’s development and urbanization have brought challenges, especially overcrowding in schools.
Poor attendance adds another layer of difficulty. Many families in Katoro lead nomadic or dynamic lifestyles due to their involvement with mining activities, and school enrollment is often inconsistent. Children frequently miss classes, and truancy is common. In the past, lessons were sometimes held outdoors, and during the rainy season, lessons were frequently disrupted, forcing children to go home early.
Thanks to recent projects that built new classrooms, students can now stay in school through all seasons. The improved infrastructure allows teachers like Lucas to provide a more stable learning environment, bringing him a step closer to his simple but vital mission: teaching every child to read and write, no matter the challenges around them.
