When people think about security, they often think about police officers or security personnel. Community policing takes a different approach. It recognizes that lasting safety is achieved when communities, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders work together to identify challenges, prevent crime, and build trust.
At Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), community policing has been a cornerstone of our approach to security and community engagement for more than a decade.
According to Tumbo Mihinzo, Superintendent, Community & Forestry Policing, the programme’s greatest success has been its ability to create strong partnerships between the mine, neighboring communities, and law enforcement agencies.
“Community policing is not just about security. It is about creating opportunities, strengthening relationships, and empowering communities to become active participants in their own development,” he explains.
Over the years, the programme has contributed to improved security, reduced illegal intrusions, fewer third-party fatalities and stronger community relations. It has also created employment opportunities for local youth while supporting community development projects funded through programme proceeds.
Most importantly, community policing has fostered a culture of trust, cooperation, and shared responsibility. By working together, communities and institutions are helping create a safer Geita—one where security and development go hand in hand.
